The process of registering as a new user of the Electron Microscope Unit involves the completion of three forms, which can be found at: http://srv.emunit.unsw.edu.au/userarea.htm
1. “Registration for EM Unit Booking System” form
2. “Request for EMU User Access to Cardax Controlled Areas” form
3. “EMU OHS Induction Form-New Users” form
The first form asks you to provide your name and contact details, your supervisor’s name, a project title and an account number against which the charges for microscope use will be made. This form will be submitted to the Unit’s Administrative Co-ordinator ( Trish Koh). Trish will take a digital photograph of you and set up your access to the on-line booking system and server. You will be asked to nominate a log-in name and password, which will be used to access our booking system. A folder where you can store data will be set up with a folder name the same as your log-in name.
The second form requires you to fill in your name and contact details and then obtain a signature of authorization from our Director or Deputy Director. When signed, this form is taken with your staff/student card to the FM Assist office where your card will be activated to let you into the swipe card controlled labs.
The third form covers some OHS issues and other procedural matters that you may encounter when working within the EM Unit. You will need to make an appointment to meet with a staff member to complete this form.
During your first meeting with a staff member you will need to provide some information about your specimen, the data you aim to acquire and the sort of imaging technique you want to use. The best way of approaching this is to undertake a literature search prior to the first meeting and to bring the results of that literature search to the meeting with you. The staff member will then be able to look at the materials and methods section of the papers with you to see what procedures have been undertaken by other researchers in the field and to determine what comparable techniques we can employ here.
